From Sweet to Fiery: Exploring the Flavorful Difference between Traditional Pikliz and Alexandra's Pikliz"

Alexandra's Pikliz - Pikliz Perfected

Written by: Alexandra Baker

Pikliz is a beloved Haitian condiment that is known for its tangy, spicy, and slightly sweet flavor, which I love. I grew up in a Haitian household where pikliz was a staple in our meals. This traditional relish is typically made by pickling shredded cabbage, carrots, onions, and bell peppers in vinegar and spices. However there has been a rise in unique variations of this classic condiment, including my very own Alexandra's Pikliz Spicy Pepper Relish.

So, what sets Alexandra's Pikliz apart from traditional pikliz? The main difference lies in my use of chili peppers instead of bell peppers. I take things in a unique and fiery direction by replacing the bell peppers with thoughtfully sourced chili peppers. We produce our pikliz in small batches and use a seasonal proprietary blend of five peppers. This blend results in a more complex flavor profile than traditional pikliz, which I love!

Another difference between traditional pikliz and Alexandra's Pikliz is the level of sweetness. While traditional pikliz has a slightly sweet flavor profile due to the addition of sugar or honey, I decided to focus on tanginess and spice. The shallots and spices I use help to balance the flavors and create a tangy and refreshing finish.

In terms of texture, both traditional pikliz and Alexandra's Pikliz offer a crunchy and slightly sweet base thanks to the shredded cabbage and carrots. However, the addition of chili peppers to Alexandra's Pikliz gives it a unique and consistant texture that is absent in traditional pikliz because it’s pureed.

Ultimately, the main difference between the two is the unique blend of chili peppers and seasonings I use. While traditional pikliz offers a balance of sweet and tangy flavors, Alexandra's Pikliz leans towards a more complex and bold flavor profile.

Whether you're a fan of traditional pikliz or looking to try something new, my creation of Alexandra's Pikliz is a delicious and unique variation on this beloved Haitian condiment. Its bold and complex flavor profile is sure to impress anyone who tries it, and it's the perfect addition to any meal that needs a little kick of heat and tanginess. Always real, flavorful, superfoods.
